Electric Zoo

Electric Zoo begins on Friday, August 30th and lasts until Sunday, September 1st! Come for one of the craziest electronica celebration during Labor Day weekend. See artists such as Avicii, David Guetta, and Armin Van Buuren perform at Randall’s Island. Don’t forget to visit some of the after parties after each day of EZoo!

#2 GMA Concert Series: Alicia Keyes

On Friday, August 31st, come to Central Park, Rumsey Playfield to watch the talented Alicia Keys perform for free! The concert begins at 7 AM, but if you want the best seats arrive by 6 AM.

#3 Beans w/ PEGASUS WARNING, GOBBY, CX KIDTRONIK, THE JUGGS

Beans will be performing at the Glasslands on Tuesday, September 3rd, along with 4 other bands. The night will be a mixture of rap, blues, and electronica as these performers hit the stage.

#4 West Indian American Day Carnival

On Monday, September 2nd, West Indian American Day Carnival will take place at Eastern Parkway at 11 AM. Come for a day full of Caribbean pride and culture, as they parade around. Enjoy Caribbean based music, food and fun while at the festival.

#5 Beacon w/ Shigeto & Heathered Pearls

On Saturday, August 31st, Beacon, Shigeto, and Heathered Pearls will be performing at the Bowery Ballroom bringing a night full of electronic beats to the stage. Beacon features smooth, calm vocals, with soft downtempo electronic beats in the background creating a relaxing atmosphere for the audience. Shigeto features driving beats energizing the crowd. Heathered Pearls features dark undertones with an overlay of soft and light tones.

NYC Unifest

From Friday, August 29th, to Sunday, September 1st, the unicycle festival will be taking place. On Friday, there will be a 13 mile unicycle race in Brooklyn. For the 30th and 31st, the festival will be on Governor’s Island.

US Open

The US Open continues at Arthur Ashe Stadium until Monday, September 9th.

#1 US Open

The US Open is being held at Arthur Ashe Stadium from Friday, August 26th, to Monday, September 9th. Watch tennis pros Serena Williams and Andy Murray defend their titles against the best in tennis.

#2 Charlie Parker Jazz Festival

From Friday, August 23rd, to Saturday, August 24th, come to Marcus Garvey Park for some of the finest jazz musicians that reflect the essence of Charlie Parker. On Sunday, August 25th, the festival will be at Tompkins Square Park. Come and listen to jazz artists such as Matt Wilson, Jimmy Heath, and Kenny Garrett for an afternoon and evening of smooth music.

#3 Afro Punk Fest

Afro Punk Fest is back in New York from Saturday, August 24th, to Sunday, August 25th at Commodore Barry Park. Experience one of the most multicultural festival around in the US. Skate around while enjoying live music, eating from one of the 24 New York’s finest food trucks, and moshing your heart away with fellow minded peers.

#4 Ecofest

On Sunday, August 25th, come and join fellow New Yorkers as they go green in Times Square. There will be kid activities such as the recycle olympics, a variety of food assortment, and various green products for you to buy.

#5 Fringe NYC

Fringe NYC warps things up on Sunday, August 25th, if you have not had the chance come and check it out. There are various shows ranging from dramas, dance, comedy, and art. Make sure you do not miss out on one of the biggest multi-art festivals around.

It’s time to get your drink on in a Shakespearean fashion. Join others on Saturday, August 17th, as you go to four different bars in the Park Slope area while also enjoying 4 different Shakespeare performances.

#2 Sand Sculpting Contest

Join Alliance for Coney Island and Astella Development Corps. on Saturday, August 17th, for a sand sculpting contest. There will be live music and performances as you watch, or participate, in building sand sculpture masterpieces! There will be cash prizes for the 3 best sand sculptures and registration is free!

#3 Ballet v6.0: Jessica Lang Dance

Ballet v6.0 is coming to an end on Saturday, August 17th, with the showing of Jessica Lang’s contemporary dance company debut performance at the Joyce Theater. They will be performing From Foreign Lands and People, a comical ballet accompanied by live music set to Schumann’s Kinderszenen Opus 15; I.N.K, a dance that utilizes Shinichi Maruyama’s video projections and an original score created from liquid sounds by Jakub Ciupinski; Aria ; and A Solo in Nine Parts.

#4 American Modern: Hopper to O’Keeffe

American Modern begins this Sunday, August 18t. The MoMA is bringing out American art made between 1915 and 1950, showcasing the cultural preoccupation of a rapidly changing America during the 1st half of the 20th century. Artists being shown range from Edward Hopper to Andrew Wyeth.

#5 Nerd Nite Global Festival

Get your nerd on as Nerd Nite brings 25 of their best Nerd Nite presenters for 3 days of nerdiness. The global festival begins on Friday, August 16th, and ends on Sunday, August 18th, at Brooklyn Lyceum. During that time there will be a performance by Main Squeeze Orchestra, games, trivia, free beer, and cheap wine!

What’s Up Wednesday! 8/8/2013 – 8/14/2013

#1 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival takes place on Saturday, August 10th, and Sunday, August 11th, at Meadow Lake. Come see one of the biggest multicultural events in NYC.  Watch as dragon boats race against each other and listen to various cultural music stemming from all over the world!

#2 Artists Sandcastle Competition

On Friday, August 9th, ten artists led teams will compete in building the best sandcastle. The day starts at noon with sunbathing and beach fun, and the competition begins at 2 PM, with judging between 5 and 6. After the competition enjoy burgers and drinks on the boardwalk, and a dance party at Rippers.

#3 Brooklyn Cyclones Star Wars Night

The Brooklyn Cyclones will be hosting a Star Wars night on Friday, August 9th at 7 PM against State College. Come and see your favorite Star Wars characters greet you at the gate and watch Darth Vader pitch the first ball.

#4 NYC Steampunk Weekend

Gemini & Scorpio, will be hosting the first NYC Steampunk Weekend! On Friday, August 9th, come out to the plaza at Lincoln Center to a night full of stunning circus acts, brass music, and punk cabaret rock. On Saturday, August 10th, the annual steampunk celebration, The Lost Circus, is bringing the heat with the legendary headliners and co-producers of the Edwardian Ball to a NYC stage. Come dressed in your best steampunk attire and be dazzled by fire acts, magic photo booths, and so much more at the Irondale Center. The Steampunk weekend wraps up with a trip down the river on a three level Mississippi style paddle boat, and dance the day away!

#5 Civil War Weekend

Come and experience the lives of Civil War soldiers as the National Park Service on Governors Island feature live historians on Saturday,August 10th, and concludes at 3 PM on Sunday, August 11th. The historians will portray units from the war, as well as Confederate prisoners, music boys, and officer’s wives.

#1 Beyonce: The Mrs. Carter Show

Beyonce is coming to Barclays Center Saturday, August 3rd to Monday August 5th for her Mrs. Carter Show world tour. Come and watch one of the biggest divas in music today, as she performs many of her top hits.

#2 Summer Streets

Starting on Saturday, August 3rd and the next two following Saturdays, 7 miles of NY streets will be open for play,walks, and bikes. It starts at 7 am to 1 Pm, and begins at Brooklyn Bridge down to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets. There will be 5 rest stops along the route where there will be various activities from zip lining to rock climbing, while also enjoying dance, music, and theater performances, along with food from the Whole Food Market.

#3 LIC Block Party

The Sculpture Center is hosting its second annual LIC Block Party Saturday, August 3rd from 12 -5 pm. There will be artist led activities, live music and performances, family friendly food options, and artists market showcasing affordable art. Some of the activities include: a social media photo booth, a makeover tent, mixed media sculptures, and even a carnival game just to name a free. The best part is that it’s entirely free!

#4 Rumble on the River

It’s fight time! On Thursday, August 1st, come to Pier 84 to watch amateur muay thai kickboxers duke it out in the ring. The fight starts at 7 pm and is free for the public with VIP ringside seat.

#5 Flamenco: 100 Years of Flamenco in New York

Come and enjoy the last few days of Flamenco as it brings its exhibitions to an end this Saturday. There will be photos, oral histories, past flamenco regalia, and costumes for everyone ot look at and enjoy the richness and development of flamenco throughout the years.

#1 Pogopalooza 10

It’s Pogopalooza time! Come out Friday, July 26th through Sunday, July 28th, as the world’s top pogo competitors go head to head for the chance to be called the best. Come and see them take on insane world records and put their pogo skills to the test. Watch the qualifiers and attempts at breaking the world record on the 27th, at Tompkins Square Park. On the 28th, the world championship will commence and there will also be a chance for you to learn how to pogo yourself at Union Square!

#2 Vintage Baseball Game

It’s baseball time, but with a twist! Watch the Gotham Baseball Club compete against the Mutual Baseball Club of New York Saturday the 27th, at Governor’s Island, NY. The teams will be competing using 1864 rules for baseball, bringing baseball back to its early glory days. Come out and check how baseball was played back in the day!

#3 NY Challenge: Ultimate Urban Scavenger Race

Get your thinking caps and running shoes on, because Nation challenge is bringing you the ultimate urban scavenger race in New York City on July 28th. Compete against multiple teams as you scour every corner of the city looking for clues for the cash prizes and the chance to compete for $5,000 at the National Championship in Las Vegas. #4 Rock Steady Dance Crew

Come on watch the iconic Rock Steady Crew break it down on July 31st, at Central Park. The Rock Steady Crew is recognized all throughout the world, and will be returning to their roots in NYC during Summer Stage. Be ready to see the world premiere of “RSC Ghetto Made” as the Rock Steady Crew brings back the hip in Hip-Hop.

#5 New York City Poetry Festival

The 3rd annual New York City Poetry Festival will take place on Saturday July 27th, and Sunday July 28th, at Governor’s Island. Come and listen to around 200 poets as they rhyme and captivate you in their rhythm. Enjoy healthy food options, a Ring of Daisies open mic area, the Poetry Brothel Tent featuring beer by Brooklyn Brewery, and Vendor’s Village, a place to buy local vendors’ items.

Gameplay 2013 comes to an end this week at Brick’s Theater. If you haven’t gotten the chance come and see the theatrical ways artists have used video games and video games concept to create a form of art.

Big City Fishing
Stop by many piers along the Hudson River to be able to learn to fish and have your own chance to catch fish, learn about the river ecology, and so much more at Big City Fishing. Takes place on Sundays on Pier 83 in Chelsea.

Animation Block Party Party
Animation Block Party begins on July 25th, and goes on until July 28th. It is the premiere of a multitude of genres of animation by the world’s best professionals, independents, and students. On the 25th there will be a opening night concert featuring Adam Green & Binki Shapiro headlining the concert with an opening performance by Hooray for Earth at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Laughter in the Park 2013
Sunshine and laughter is a perfect combination so on July 28th come out to Central Park to catch some rays and get some laughs in. The best part is that it is all free!

Spoons, Toons, and Booze
Cereal, booze, and old school cartoons, makes any night a great night, so come by Nitehawk Cinema on Friday the 26th, or Saturday the 27th, at midnight to enjoy the festivities.

Breaking Bad Marathon
Starting July 26th, to July 30th, the Film Society in Lincoln Center will be showing a season of Breaking Bad every day! It’s free so catch up on everyone’s favorite meth dealer at the Film Center Amphitheater.

#1 Jay Z & Justin Timberlake Concert

Time to get your suit and tie ready to go, cause Justin Timberlake will be hitting New York City on July 19th and 20th at Yankees Stadium with Jay Z during their Legends of Summer Tour. Jay Z is a multi platinum artists best known for hits such as “99 problems”, “Empire State of Mind”, and “In Paris” and has just released his 12th studio album “Magna Carta Holy Grill”.

Justin Timberlake began in N’Sync before branching into solo performance creating hits “Sexy Back”, “Dead and Gone”, and “Suits and Tie” to name a few. With these two iconic artists performing on the same stage, this is a concert you do not want to miss.

#2 Tomato Battle

Get your throwing arm ready because on Saturday July 20th, Tomato Battle will be in full swing at the Aviator Sports & Events Center. Starting at 12 PM participants can arrive for registration and for the beer garden, followed by live music, games, and a costume contest between 1PM and 3:30PM. The ultimate battle begins at 4PM and pits you against thousands of other New York residents, for a tomato free for all.

For those that are worried about wasting food, the tomatoes being used are inedible, past ripe, and are going to be thrown out regardless, so why not throw them instead? For more information, click here.

#3 Lights Out Scavenger Hunt

On Thursday July 18th, Lights out scavenger hunt will be underway hosted by ScavengerUSA.com. Scour the streets of New York with your handy glow sticks and team, doing fun tasks and finding hidden clues, while earning points for your team to win the grand prize.

Registration begins and 7 PM and goes until 8PM where The hunt will begin at the Village Pourhouse followed by an after party at the SideBar at 10 PM. Come on out for a night of fun and entertaining activities.

#4 Martha Graham Dance Company

On July 23rd at 8PM, come and see Martha Graham Dance Company with special guests Dancin’ Downtown at The Joyce perform in Central Park during Summer Stage. Martha Graham Dance Company is recognized as one of the leading contemporary dance companies in America and is internationally acclaimed in over 50 countries throughout the world.

The Company will perform Acts of Light , Chronicle , and Lamentation Variations by Bulareyaung Pagarlava, Larry Keigwin, and Richard Move. Dancin’ Downtown at The Joyce is a collaboration between Dancers Responding to AIDS and The Joyce Theater.

#5 The 2nd Annual Dizzy Bat Race

It’s dizzy bat time! For those who do not know, dizzy bat is the term used when you spin around a bat and proceed to run around the bases in the fastest time. It will be a very fun and entertaining time and there will be a baseball theme prize for the person with the fastest time.

The event starts at 7PM on July 18th at East Meadow field, Central Park and is hosted by New York Rogue Runners.

On July 22nd and 23rd, FUN. will be performing with Teagan and Sara at Pier 26 at 4PM.

Bassboat featuring Basshunter
Basshunter will be hitting the city at Queens of Heart pier 78 at 11:30 PM on July 20th. Come for a time of driving beats and a night of fun.

Urban Lawn Party
On July 20th from 11AM – 5PM, the Urban Lawn Party will be commencing at Charlton Street. There will be a multitude of events and activities to do.
